Negroponte: $100 laptops due next year
(InfoWorld) - M.I.T. Media Lab co-founder Nicholas Negroponte showed off the latest prototype of the US$100 computer to a gathering of educators in San Diego Thursday. Telling the National Educational Computing Conference (NECC) that "children are the main agents of change," the author of the best-selling "Being Digital" said he expects millions of the low-cost laptops to be distributed to children in developing countries starting next year, according to a statement issued after the event. The focal point of Negroponte's One Laptop Per Child initiative -- which aims to produce a $100 laptop computer for distribution to children in developing countries -- features a hand crank that generates the two watts of power the machine needs to operate. It uses a Wi-Fi mesh to connect to the Internet, and runs open-source software. All of the components are chosen for low power usage and low cost to make the portable computers as inexpensive as possible. NECC members got an early look at one of the project's most innovative developments: a dual mode display that can be easily viewed in natural and artificial light, which helps to reduce the machine's power consumption. Despite these efforts, the price tag of each computer still comes in at $130-140, although Negroponte and others involved in the project believe the cost will drop as component prices decrease. More information about this effort to reduce the digital divide can be found at the One Laptop Per Child Web site.

Wikipedia founder tackles politics
(InfoWorld) - HThe founder of Wikipedia, the peer-edited online encyclopedia, has launched a new political wiki site, saying it's "time for politics to become more intelligent." Jimmy "Jimbo" Wales launched the Campaigns Wikia site on the Fourth of July. "It's time for ... democracy to really involve the people," he said in the site's mission statement. "Broadcast media tells you what to think and doesn't let you get involved. It's time to focus on what you need, what you care about, and the messages you want to get out." The goal of Campaigns Wikia is to bring diverse people together to engage in intelligent debate, Wales wrote on the site. Wales hopes to engage people who "share the idea that they would rather see democratic politics be about engaging with the serious ideas of intelligent opponents, about activating and motivating ordinary people to get involved and really care about politics beyond the television sound bites." Wales said he doesn't know how to make politics "healthier" and more responsive to voters, but he believes good ideas can come from potential users of the site. Wales acknowledged that his goal may be "crazy," but Wikipedia, the flagship product of the Wikimedia Foundation Inc., has seen major growth since it was launched in January 2001. Written largely by volunteer contributors, Wikipedia hit 1 million English articles in March. As of March, there were versions of Wikipedia in 125 languages, containing 3.3 million articles. Wales, in his mission statement for Campaigns Wikia, criticized current political campaigns' focus on "broadcast politics." "And let's be simple and bluntly honest about it, left or right, conservative or liberal, broadcast politics are dumb, dumb, dumb," he wrote. "Campaigns have been more about getting the television messaging right, the image, the sound bite, than about engaging ordinary people in understanding and caring how political issues really affect their lives." But blog and wiki authors are inventing a new kind of media, he added. "It is my belief that this new media is going to invent a new era of politics. If broadcast media brought us broadcast politics, then participatory media will bring us participatory politics. The candidates who will win elections in the future will be the candidates who build genuinely participative campaigns by generating and expanding genuine communities of engaged citizens." Among the political issues listed on Campaigns Wiki's front page are terrorism, digital rights, gay marriage, and public health care.

Battle lines drawn over Net neutrality
(InfoWorld) - As the U.S. Congress argues the pros and cons of network neutrality, many companies doing business on the Internet say their very futures may be at stake. Net neutrality supporters want new laws prohibiting Internet providers from blocking or degrading traffic from their competitors? networks. If providers are allowed to give preferential treatment to some Web traffic, businesses using competing tools will find themselves in the slow lane, said Dave Greves, owner of Denver-based Faction Media, an advertising agency that focuses on online campaigns. Greves? 20-employee company uses Web analytics packages, an ad server product, a hosted e-mail service, and even Google for business-to-business advertising. Without Net neutrality rules, a broadband provider could block Google in favor of its own, or a partner?s, search engine, Greves said. ?Of course, it?s all speculation, but it could radically change the way we operate,? Greves said. ?It would put us effectively back in startup mode.? Determining the full effects of Net neutrality can be difficult, however, in part because the concept is hard to define precisely. Most of the debate has taken place inside the Washington Beltway, where lawmakers and outsiders have proposed several different versions. One proposal, from Massachusetts Representative Ed Markey and other House Democrats, would require broadband providers to offer the same enhanced routing for services such as television over IP to competitors that they set aside for themselves. That proposal represents one of the most specific ? and, opponents say, regulatory ? approaches to Net neutrality. Members of Congress have introduced three other bills, but none so far has gained broad support in either the House or Senate. Most recently, on June 28 the Senate rejected a proposal to add a Net neutrality provision to a bill now under discussion. Business in the cross fire The neutrality issue pits large broadband providers such as AT&T, Comcast, and Verizon against consumer groups and large Internet-based companies such as Amazon.com, eBay, and Google. A neutrality law would create new regulations for the Internet, broadband providers say. They argue that they need to explore new business plans as a way to pay for next-generation broadband networks, and that they should be free to divide up their broadband pipes to offer new services such as television over IP. Click for larger view. One possible new business plan: Charging e-commerce companies fees to get preferential routing for traffic to their sites. Officials from AT&T and BellSouth have advocated such a plan in recent months. In November, AT&T CEO Ed Whitacre famously complained in a BusinessWeek interview that Google and VoIP provider Vonage were using ?my pipes free.? ?I ain?t going to let them do that because we have spent this capital and we have to have a return on it,? Whitacre told the magazine. AT&T, created when SBC swallowed up the old AT&T in a $16 billion deal in November, had a revenue of $15.8 billion during the first quarter of 2006, with a net income of $1.4 billion. Verizon, which closed an $8.5 billion deal to buy MCI in January, had a revenue of $22.7 billion in the first quarter, with a net income of $1.6 billion. Executives at Amazon.com and Google say they pay millions of dollars in Internet fees each year. They and other Net neutrality advocates say the free-flowing nature of the Internet would fundamentally change without a new law after recent decisions by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission and Supreme Court effectively deregulated broadband. The FCC freed DSL providers from sharing their lines with competitors in August 2005. An attempt by independent Internet service providers to share the lines of cable broadband providers was shot down by the Supreme Court in June of that year. Because of those decisions, broadband providers will inevitably try to block or degrade Web content from competitors such as independent VoIP or video providers, Net neutrality advocates say. Despite Net neutrality opponents? assertion that broadband competition is coming, advocates point to statistics showing large telecom and cable providers in control of 98 percent of the U.S. broadband market, with no more than two providers available to most U.S. residents. For the free market to work, there needs to be healthy competition from multiple providers, said Paul Misener, vice president of global public policy for Amazon.com. True broadband competition for most U.S. residents is five to seven years away, Misener predicted. ?It?s just not happening. It may, but it?s not there now,? Misener said at a recent Net neutrality debate at George Washington University. ?When [opponents] say, ?Let the free market work,? ask them where that market is.? Class struggle among ISPs Broadband providers have repeatedly said they will not block or impair their customers? existing access to competing Web content or services. But Pac-West, an independent telecom provider based in Stockton, Calif., fears that lack of a Net neutrality law could lead to large broadband providers blocking Internet traffic from smaller providers. That could mean the end of many smaller providers, Pac-West officials said. The FCC decision on DSL effectively ended so-called common carrier rules requiring broadband providers to carry all traffic, and it?s not a reach to predict large broadband providers will stop accepting traffic from smaller competitors, said John Sumpter, Pac-West?s vice president. Sumpter compared the broadband market without Net neutrality rules to the Web browser market. When Microsoft began to bundle Internet Explorer with its operating system, it nearly killed its top competitor, Netscape. The current cable/telecom duopoly in broadband, coupled with telecom carriers AT&T, BellSouth, and Verizon controlling about 70 percent of the nation?s Internet backbone, means the large broadband providers have a advantage similar to Microsoft?s in the browser wars, Sumpter said. ?Left to their own devices, the larger carriers will be able to cripple all competition,? Sumpter said. ?Customers attached to the smaller carrier will inevitably migrate to the larger carrier.? On the other side, more than two dozen network equipment vendors have called on Congress to reject Net neutrality rules. In a May 17 letter to congressional leaders, 35 manufacturers ? including Alcatel, Cisco, Corning, and Qualcomm, among others ? said there?s no evidence that broadband providers now block or impair competing content. The Internet doesn?t need the burden of new regulations, the letter said, adding that passing a bill risks ?hobbling the rapidly developing new technologies and business models of the Internet with rigid, potentially stultifying rules.? If Net neutrality becomes law, broadband providers won?t be able to separate out new services such as video over IP, said Mike McCurry, co-chairman of the Hands off the Internet coalition, representing AT&T, BellSouth, and other Net neutrality opponents. ?They want to make the Internet into one dumb pipe,? said McCurry during a debate with Amazon.com?s Misener. ?There?d be no room for innovation.? A Net neutrality law passed in Congress would lead to a long proceeding in the FCC, causing a delay in new services offered by the broadband providers, McCurry said. New regulations would also discourage investment in broadband providers, he added. ?This regulatory scheme might, in fact, impede the kind of investment we?ll need to make if we?re going to have this Internet of the future,? McCurry said. ?We know there are billions of dollars that are needed to get the enhancements and improvements we want on the Internet.?

How do I remove Back2Zip?

How do I remove Back2Zip?
And before you say "select the Remove Back2Zip from the menu in Programs", don't. That appears to work, then I get a screen popup that says nearly all files have been deleted and those remaining will be deleted the next time I start the computer. But the next time I start the computer, Back2Zip is in my progam files again, the little zip folder is in my system tray doing it's thing, there is a folder on my desktop that backed up files are being sent to, and it's as if it never went away. What gives? And it's not listed in my Add/Remove programs, so I can't seem to get Windows to delete it. I just decided after loading it I didn't really want it and now I can't get rid of it.http://free-backup.info

IBM taps Lenovo for PC software
(InfoWorld) - Lenovo Group Ltd. said Monday that it has agreed to allow IBM Global Technology Services' arm to license its ThinkVantage software for deployment on non-Lenovo PCs. The ThinkVantage software is designed to cut IT costs by automating PC support functions such as wired and wireless connectivity settings, PC desktop migration and data recovery after a system crash or virus infection. The deal marks the first time the software is available for systems other than ThinkPad notebooks and ThinkCentre desktops. Under the agreement with Lenovo, which bought IBM Corp.'s PC division for US$1.25 billion last year, IBM is granted a license to six ThinkVantage client applications. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Regulators approve EU fine against Microsoft
(InfoWorld) - The European Commission is poised to fine Microsoft again, after antitrust regulators from the 25 countries in the European Union gave unanimous support Monday to the Commission's plan to punish the company for failing to comply with its 2004 antitrust ruling, according to sources following the case. The company faces a new fine of hundreds of millions of euros. The Commission, which acts as the main competition authority in the European Union, told Microsoft in December that it had failed to comply with the March 2004 ruling. Since then it has said that the company could be fined up to ?2 million (US$2.6 million, as of Monday) a day, counting from last December. The Commission refused to comment on the closed door meeting it held Monday with the national regulators. People following the meeting said there was some debate about whether to push ahead with a new fine now, as Microsoft prepares to submit information that it hopes will meet the requirements of the 2004 ruling. On March 24, 2004, the Commission fined Microsoft ?497 million for leveraging its near-monopoly in the PC operating system market to gain advantage in the markets for workgroup server operating systems and media players. Among other remedies, the Commission ordered Microsoft to release a version of Windows XP without a built-in media player, and to provide its competitors with details of certain communication protocols used by its server products. The Commission appointed a monitoring trustee to keep tabs on Microsoft's progress in meeting the remedies. Initially Microsoft claimed it had submitted adequate information but in April it said it finally understood what information the regulator was asking for. Since then it has been working closely with the Commission and the trustee, Neil Barrett, a computer expert picked by Microsoft to monitor the company?s compliance with the 2004 ruling. Microsoft said in a statement Monday that it is dedicating "massive resources" to ensure it meets "the aggressive schedule and the high quality standard" set by the Commission and the trustee. Before Monday's meeting, some of the national regulators were expected to call on the Commission to back off, at least until the final batch of technical information has been submitted. It is due by July 18, according to deadlines agreed between the Commission, the trustee and Microsoft. But there was no real attempt to put the brakes on the process. "On the contrary, the national regulators were all right behind the Commission," said one source close to the proceedings. The next step in the process is another meeting between the Commission and national regulators next Monday to decide how much to fine Microsoft for failing to honor the 2004 ruling. If the commission fines Microsoft ?2 million a day, as it has threatened to in recent months, the fine would total over ?400 million ? nearly as much as the first fine two years ago. A final ruling is expected on Wednesday next week.

Yahoo-MSN miss IM interoperability date
(InfoWorld) - Yahoo Inc. and MSN Messenger instant messaging users will have to wait a bit longer for the promised interoperability between the two services. Yahoo and Microsoft said late last year that they would launch a service in the second quarter of this year that would allow their customers to send and receive messages and share buddy lists between the two instant messaging (IM) networks. With the second quarter come and gone, representatives from both companies say the interoperable service will launch globally "very soon." When the service does launch, it's unlikely to include any additional capabilities than those that were announced late last year. At the time, the companies said the service would let users exchange messages, see buddy online presence status, share some emoticons and add buddies from either service to their lists. But they didn't say that the service would support some widely-used features such as voice, photo sharing or video conferencing. "We will continue to jointly innovate and explore the delivery of enhanced services to users, including voice, which we believe is an important component of IM interoperability," Microsoft said through its public relations company The Red Consultancy Ltd. There are technical issues that the companies will have to address to support voice interoperability, the company said. MSN Messenger is likely to interoperate with other IM networks in the future, the company said. "We need to assure that the costs of interoperation are in line with the business benefits," it said. Yahoo, however, doesn't have plans and doesn't expect to interoperate with other IM clients, said Nicola Jones, a Yahoo spokeswoman. IM users have long clamored for interoperability between clients but IM service providers resisted as they competed against each other to build the largest customer base. The threat of competition from Google's IM service, launched in the middle of last year, may have driven Yahoo and Microsoft to team up in hope of combining their weight against the new entrant. The battle lines are clearly drawn. At the end of last year, Google and AOL said they'd make their IM services interoperable. The two camps, with Google and AOL on one side and Yahoo and Microsoft on the other, even support competing protocols that enable the interoperability. Google supports the XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol) protocol while Microsoft and Yahoo will connect their IM offerings using SIMPLE (Session Initiation Protocol for Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions). SIMPLE and XMPP are competing protocols, both part of standards-making processes in the Internet Engineering Task Force standards body. The battle between the groups may also be affecting third party companies. Cerulean Studios offers the popular Trillian IM client software that allows users to combine many IM services within a single user interface. The software was part of Google Pack, a collection of free software that Google promotes, but was abruptly dumped from the suite in May. Google didn't explain the reason for deciding not to include Trillian in the Google Pack.

HP sharpens product design focus
(InfoWorld) - Over the next 18 months, Hewlett-Packard Co. will place increasing importance on product design as a way to gain more market share and to substantially cut product development and support costs. The man leading these efforts is Sam Lucente, HP's vice president of design, a laid-back, soft-spoken guy with a ponytail. He joined HP three years ago after heading up his own design company and previous stints at Netscape and IBM Corp. where he was the lead designer on the vendor's ThinkPad 560 and 710 notebooks. "The power of HP's portfolio is what really attracted me to the company," Lucente said. The vendor sells everything from consumer products such as digital cameras and televisions to high-end servers and storage used by businesses. When he arrived at HP, Lucente discovered plenty of innovative design work going on, as befits a company whose tagline is "Invent." But it was mostly being done in isolation by individuals or small groups in their own cubicles. "People had no idea what those next to them were doing," he said. While encountering some initial resistance, Lucente has worked at establishing a design practice within HP, where 200-plus designers can build on each other's discoveries and collaborate on technologies to benefit the entire company. "HP has its roots as an engineering company, but as our products are commoditized, design plays a much bigger role," he said. "Three years ago it was an experiment, and now we see it driving a lot of profitability." In the recent and not-so recent past, HP has been very inconsistent when it comes to product design, said Crawford Del Prete, senior vice president of research at IDC. What companies like Apple Computer Inc. have been very good at is "inviting the user in" with products that resemble each other and are operated in the same way. For Lucente, design at HP has three main missions -- simplification, differentiation and innovation. He wants to create a single archetype for each HP product line, replacing a broad collection of parts with a single, consistent image. "We?re number one in laser printers, but we have too many styles," he said. "It's all about bonding with our customers; it's an emotional relationship." Examining HP's hardware and software, Lucente was surprised by the vast amount of diversity around simple functionality such as power controls and help menus. Just standardizing on a single HP logo design has saved the company US$10 million in procurement costs, he estimated, given that the HP logo badge ships on hundreds of millions of products. HP has also consolidated some 50 different on-off buttons into a single design. On the software side, HP is collapsing all the disparate 47 help menus in its OpenView systems management family of software into a single standard help menu. The vendor is also striving for consistency in the order of colors that signal systems alerts in OpenView, as well as having a common user interface for all its new management software. Having more design standards is helping HP more quickly integrate acquired technology, Lucente added. Standardizing on common tools and materials gives HP a strategic advantage in lowering its costs. Having familiar menus can help cut down on the number of help desk calls the company has to field, according to IDC's Del Prete. Tighter product integration might help HP stand out in the crowded consumer electronics market. For instance, the company could offer more complete integration among digital cameras, printers and its Snapfish online photo service Web site. On his part, Lucente is working to ensure that the way users move and organize their digital photos is similar on computers, televisions and digital kiosks. HP has also come up with the Q navigation control system, a series of six buttons in the shape of a backwards-facing letter Q. As well as the common buttons for up, down, left and right and a central "OK" button, the Q includes a back button that provides the same function as the undo button on computers. Using the back button, users can reverse their steps as many times as they like, he said. Josh Bernoff, vice president and principal analyst at Forrester Research Inc. was impressed by the Q. "I stood up and cheered when Sam showed it to me," he said. A well-designed product can result in "more rapid viral sales" as users tell their friends how cool a product is, he added. HP is rolling out Q across its remote controls, printers and digital cameras. The company is also considering offering it on its personal digital assistants (PDAs), Lucente said. HP developed the Q after completing intense ethnographic studies of 28 families around the world by sitting in their living rooms and observing how they used their electronic devices. "HP is one of the only IT companies whose portfolio is so deep in consumer and enterprise products that it touches people at so many different points in their lives," IDC's Del Prete said. The end result of having a more similar look and feel across product lines may be more sales. If someone's already familiar and comfortable with the controls of an HP printer at work, they may also opt to buy an HP printer for use at home, Del Prete said. Common design can help provide a comfort level to consumers. "The next time they go to a TV retailer and are faced with a sea of plasma and LCDs, they might stop for a second at the HP televisions because they know the controls," Del Prete said. Del Prete believes that HP is ahead of competitors in the consumer and business arenas when it comes to thinking about incorporating "common design signature elements" across its entire product line. It's hard to assess how the HP efforts will pay off at present, since common design elements aren't in all of the vendor's products yet. "It's bleeding into their product lines, you see splotches of it," Del Prete said. Within another one to one and a half years, those common design elements will become a key element of HP products, he added.

Worm appears as Microsoft antipiracy program

Worm appears as Microsoft antipiracy program
(InfoWorld) - Security analysts have detected a new piece of malware that appears to run as a Microsoft program used to detect unlicensed versions of its operating system. The malware has been classified as a worm and spreads through AOL's Instant Messenger program, said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos, a security vendor. Sophos is calling it W32.Cuebot-K, a new variation in the Cuebot family of malware. The worm has a range of malicious functions. After it's installed, the worm immediately tries to connect to two Web sites, a sign it may try to download other bad programs on the machine. Cuebot-K can disable other software, shut off the Windows firewall, download new malicious programs, perform basic DDOS (distributed denial of service) attacks, scan local files and spawn a command prompt, Sophos said. Worms that spread through instant messaging programs often appear as messages or links sent from friends, which trick a user into executing the program. Cuebot-K propagates by sending itself as a file named "wgavn.exe" to more people in the user's "Buddy List" but without a message, Cluley said. If installed on a computer, Cuebot-K is registered as a new system device driver service named "wgavn." When a list of services running on the computer is summoned, the worm appears as "Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Notification" Sophos said. Cuebot-K's registry entry appears as HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wgavn\. The worm's ironic ruse comes as Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) program is being criticized for functioning like spyware. WGA collects hardware and software data on a user's computer and compares it to a database of licensed operating systems. If an improper copy is detected, Microsoft warns the user and cuts off some free downloads.

Telstra threatens to scrap $2.2B broadband network
(InfoWorld) - The head of Australia's largest telecommunications company has threatened to scrap an A$3 billion (US$2.2 billion) national high-speed, fixed-line broadband network. Telstra Corp. had proposed to build a next generation fiber-to-the-node (FTTN) wireline network to cover Australia's five major cities initially, then extend it to smaller towns later. But government regulations could require the company to allow its rivals to use the network free or at low rates, something the company won't stand for. "We will not invest in FTTN unless we achieve regulatory settings that will permit Telstra?s 1.6 million shareholders to earn a competitive return that they expect and they deserve," said Sol Trujillo, chief executive officer of Telstra, in a speech to the National Press Club in Canberra on Thursday. The company released written copies of the speech. The company used to be Australia's national carrier, but has been undergoing a long privatization process. It is supposed to sell more than 6 billion shares to investors later this year in a public offering valued at around A$24 billion. Australia's FTTN, which is a kind of high-speed, fiber-optic network that goes to the neighborhood but not directly to the home, is expensive because of the vast distances between cities in the nation and its relatively small population. The initial plan to set up the system in the five biggest cities would ensure the network covers around half of Australia's population. "Unlike our competitors, Telstra stands ready to make these investments if the regulatory settings do not require us to give away our assets owned by our shareholders, and enable a reasonable commercial return," Trujillo said, adding that the company is serious about scrapping the FTTN plan. "I want to be clear about something I keep on reading about -- that we?re bluffing. If there?s any belief in the room let me dismiss that belief," he said. Use of the network would be offered to competitors at commercial rates, he said. He also said the company's national wireless high-speed 3G (third-generation) mobile network is already half built. The 3G network is slated to be in place by the first of 2007, when it will reach 98 percent of the country's population.

Microsoft readies Team Foundation Server service pack
(InfoWorld) - Microsoft is working on a service pack for its recently released Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server software, with improvements planned in areas such as authentication and data warehousing, Microsoft officials write in their blogs. Team Foundation Server is the collaboration component of the company s Visual Studio 2005 Team System ALM (Application Lifecycle Management) platform. A beta release of the service pack is due in the near future, according to Microsoft's Rob Caron, a content architect for Team System. The service pack will include fixes and improvements, such as basic authentication support for accessing Team Foundation Server over the Internet. It also will have updates for using Team Foundation Server with Windows Vista and Office 2007, Caron said. Enhanced performance and scaling in the areas of data warehousing, version control, and work item tracking are planned for the service pack, Microsoft's Brian Harry, a product unit manager for Team Foundation Server at Microsoft, said. Extranet support in the service pack features an ISAPI (Internet Server API) filter and the ability to deploy Team Foundation Server more easily in environments where people on the Internet need to access the server without having a VPN. Work Item Type (WIT) support, meanwhile, will provide a mechanism for designing work item forms that host custom controls. "The data behind the controls can either be persisted in WIT fields or elsewhere," Harry said in his blog. "I'm hoping people go crazy with it and build some awesome custom controls." Separately from the service pack, Microsoft is planning a new version of the Microsoft Source Code Control Interface (MSCCI) provider. MSCCI connects development tools to version control providers such as Team Foundation Server. The new provider will feature improvements such as the ability to modify work items in the checkin window. Team Foundation Server began shipping in March. A Microsoft representative said the feature set of the service pack could change based on customer feedback following the beta release.
